Diversity Committee meeting notes for July 11, ‘05
Present: Erin, Channette, Michelle, Pamela, Laura (guest), Donna
This meeting was held at the Spencer Research library. Erin asked if we liked
having a different venue for meetings and it was agreed that a change of scenery
was agreeable.
Reading group: Sherry Williams will facilitate this group for those interested (an email will be sent out, probably to kulib for joining). The idea is to send out an article to have everyone read in advance then get together to discuss it. The first topic will likely be generational dynamics and differences in the workplace. Any ideas for topics, email Sherry.
Website: COOL! There was much enthusiasm about the redesign of the website and praise for Michelle. It will be nice to have a message board, links to other campus diversity sites (soon to come) and the library sites.
There was some dismay about the exhibition area going away from the libraries. This is a loss for us all.
There was some discussion about the next national diversity in libraries conference (’06) and the possibility of teaming up with K-State to do a presentation. Mentioned again how the impetus for the residency program was started after attending the presentation by KSU last year. (Donna joined us at this point and we enquired where we were in terms of approval and moving forward with this program. There is definitely an interest in attending the next conference, at any rate.
It was noted that we want to get back to doing more activities sponsored by the DIV COM, such as the movie series. Channette is putting together a list for us to vote on. Any ideas? Let her know.
Discussion of the appointment of chair and secretary of this group, which is a 2 year appointment. Erin would be interested in staying on as co-chair, if we all agreed and if there anyone who would be interested in co-chairing. Michelle will ponder this. Julie is also willing to continue as secretary, but will relinquish if anyone else is interested in doing it. Discussion and decision of this can be made next meeting.
Donna discussed the Diversity Beans and the usefulness as staff training in diversity issues. The idea is having preconceived notions based on previous experience with jelly beans, while these in particular are different than what is expected (ie, black isn’t necessarily licorice, etc.) There will be more discussion about this at another time. We all thought it was a cool idea.
The next meeting will be Aug. 1st in Anschutz.
