The University of Kansas Libraries
KU Libraries Diversity Committee's Minutes Archive
Sept. ‘06
Present: Erin, Michelle, Channette, Pamela, Donna, Julie. Guest: Dean Harricombe.
We didn’t have a lot prepared, as we were unaware
the Dean would be joining us, but we did have our Guidelines and the
charge to the Diversity Committee to present. We informed her about
staff, collections, events to promote diversity in libraries, the campus
and community (movie and reading series). We gave an overview of
programs we’ve done in the past and discussed a mentorship program
and the internship/residency program.
We talked about the Yan-Koloba game we recently acquired and the benefit
of team-building. We discussed the website and a desire to have
a campus wide calendar of events for all library staff to know about.
The Dean asked ‘What can I do for you?’ and discussed passion statements and a true commitment at KU and the Libraries. She has a broader strategic vision beyond the libraries; work collectively. Get student perspective as well, not just staff.
We also talked about the Diversity Meal/Open House of
the past and the desire to resurrect that. There was a suggestion of
having beginning of the semester libraries tours in other languages (EAL
does this). We want quality and visibility.
Dean wants to stay in touch with us and we have support from the administration.
Lorraine told us about Books for the Developing World which is part of the World Library program. We could be involved in collecting books to be sent to other libraries in developing countries, work with other librarians, etc. Check the ALA website for more info.
