2. Access to EAL Collections

East Asian Library is at the top floor (5th floor) of the Watson Library on KU main Lawrence campus (Lawrence Campus Collection Map). Anyone may use the KU collections on site.  All visiting faculty and students along with residents of the state of Kansas are given borrowing privileges.  Other patrons can also be granted borrowing privileges.  Consult the KU Libraries Access Policy for details. Questions regarding the policy may be directed to the Ask a Librarian service. Patrons with disabilities who need assistance may find information on the KU Libraries Services for People with Disabilities web page.

The KU Online Catalog ("OCAT" for short) contains approximately 85% of East Asian collection. East Asian materials not in the online catalog (some Dewey collection and brief list collection) have been under retrospective conversion process and will be made available online by the end of 2008. KU OCAT has been displaying CJK characters since 2000.

Locate Books in the East Asian Library
Stack Map (pdf)

Call number (or classification number), usually on a label on a book spine, is where a book is shelved in library stacks. There are three shelving schemes number system used by EAL: Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress, and an accession number scheme we called brief list.

The Library of Congress (LC) Call Number: Books begin with letter "A" through "P" are located on the 5th floor main stacks Books begin with letters "PL" through "Z" are located on 4½ Center.

LC numbers begin with alphabetical prefix:

Dewey Decimal collection are located on level 4½ Center stacks. The numbers do not begin with alphabetical prefix.

    All folios (LC and Dewey) are shelved at 1-East Watson stacks.

Brief Listed Numbers: All brief cataloged books are in the Center stacks in Watson. Every record has author and title entries in the Online Catalog, and the numbering sequences for these books are:

30-00001 -- 30-99999 Example: 30-01542 v1
East Asian art books located in the East Asian Library East end.

    33-00001 -- 33-99999 Example: 33-13539
    East Asian Chinese language books located in 4½ center stacks in Watson.

    35-00001 -- 35-99999 Example: 35-03301
    East Asian Japanese books located in 4½ center stacks in Watson.

East Asian Retrospective Conversion Project

East Asian Dewey collection and CJK brief listed records have been under retrospective conversion process since 2006. We expect the project to be completed by 2008.
