KULSS Elections:
-
Jill will touch base with Sheila Orth about the University Committee on Libraries Committee. It's a 2 year appointment and we need to know if she will continue serving for a second year.
Other:
- Day on the Job at KU for Emporia's SLIM students was yesterday. Attendance was pretty low compared to previous years. Only about 12 people came.
Group Reports
Group 1 (Adam):
- Adam’s unit is having a party for students in Anschutz 102 next Wednesday.
- Cataloging is happy about nearly completing the Crerar project (it's a lot of old business publications that were kept in a coal bin that KU acquired sometime in the 1960’s.) These materials should be finished by early Summer to be stored in the Annex.
Group 2 (Julie):
- Jules' group is shifting like mad in 2 ½ west and both ends of 1 ½ east.
- Room 210 had their potluck on April 27th.
- Representatives from Swetswise, one of the Libraries' serials subscriptions agents, came to visit staff in Acquisitions/Serials.
Group 3 (Robert):
- Art & Architecture:
- Ann Snow reports their bookeye scanner is on the fritz. She suspects the trouble is caused by wear and tear because it gets used a lot.
- Anschutz:
- They are doing the final test of the fire alarm systems tomorrow morning from 6:00-8:00. The state fire marshal is coming tomorrow.
- They are shelf reading government documents and looking at cases that contain brochures and items that are missing call numbers.
- The Art Committee is getting close to putting art up in the libraries (they have about 20-30 pieces). Anschutz will have the hanging art and Watson will have an electronic art display projected on a screen. They hope to have it up in the Summer and ready for the Fall.
- Getting 40 new PC's and 4 Macintosh computers over the summer. Zig-zag stations will be installed. They're trying to increase the number of express printing stations over the Summer (there are 3 now).
- Adding a research consultation link to the website so the use of the consultation room may pick up.
- Should be getting recreational reading in Anschutz.
- Spencer:
- They're having a student party next Wednesday.
- Reader Services is moving offices sometime next week to start clearing out for the Reading Room construction.
- The week after finals the Johnson Room will be used as the reading room for the summer. They're not scheduling classes in the Johnson Room for the Summer or Fall.
- Some staff from the libraries are going to the Kansas Sampler this weekend.
- Administration:
- Rita Wilson is retiring on July 11. Her position is now posted
Committee Reports
Support Staff Senate:
- Some faculty members are concerned that some provisions of the new strategic planning will take away some control from faculty regarding decisions (tenure, promotion, etc.) previously made by their departments or themselves.
- The USS Senate recently held their internal elections. Mary Ann Baker was re-elected to serve on the University Senate Executive Committee (SenEx) which also means she will serve on the University Senate itself and the USS Senate Executive Committee. The USS Senate will be setting up their summer schedule soon and the charges for their committees. Let Mary Ann know if you have concerns of a governance nature that you’d like to see addressed by the USS Senate.
-
It’s not too late to let KS legislators know of your concerns and suggestions. Everyone should get their friends and family in other parts of Kansas to share their concerns with their legislators also!
