Classified Conference KU Libraries

December 17, 2003

Present: Monica Claassen-Wilson (Group I), Kevin Fussell (Group II), Denise Swartz (Group III), Mary Ann Baker (Group IV), Mike Rusche (Vice-Chair), Jeff McAdams (Chair), Laura Horne (SDC representative)

Absent: Kurt Blythe (Secretary)

Report from Laura Horne on behalf of the SDC: They have postponed discussion for setting up tracks until January to allow time for the IS (Information Services) people to define their values in hopes that the SDC will mesh. Right now they are discussing things based on the survey they gave to all staff via the Internet. Such things are a Q&A session with the Dean, Dept. updates for the entire library, and information on ACS courses. They will try to keep regular ongoing programs (like teleconferences) for the spring in addition to planning new ideas. The tracks they hope to set up will be from scratch and hopefully tailored to KU libraries. Someone will hopefully replace Sandy in her ex-officio position. Visit the SDC website for their minutes and charges.

CEYA committee – They need a new member (to replace Helen). Rita Wilson said she would do it, but wanted to let other people have a chance because it is so fun.

Group Rep. Reports

Group I – Monica – ILL has hired a new LA II. Right now employees in the RS dept. are developing a training plan and then will consult with their supervisor (in hopes that people will be able to get training for things that interest them as well as impact their job). This is in conjunction with re-thinking the RS workflow. To some employees this feels like a giant step forward.

Group II – Kevin – Cataloging is made up of three different sub-sections (Support Services, Copy Cataloging and Authorities). The support services section is hiring 2 people. Also, cataloging is hiring a temporary Spanish cataloger to work on a backlog.

Group III – Denise – Sandy is leaving the libraries and everyone will miss her (but no one knows what will happen next). Helen Dee is also leaving.

Group IV – Mary Ann – Spencer has a few new keypads. Engineering is still preparing materials for transfer to Annex.

Issues for next Stella & Sandy meeting:
q How will the LITS change affect classified employees?
q Any updates on the BARD?
q What will happen with Sandy’s position? Other vacant positions?

The next CCEB meeting will be January 14, 2004 from 1:00-2:30 in Watson A.

All had a good time; all enjoyed cookies, donuts, fudge and chips. Thanks everyone!
