Committee Reports

Diversity Committee (DC)
*Diversity Beans – Donna Brewer’s daughter has done this event with people of all ages. I won’t divulge the secret of this event, but the basic premise is that things aren’t always what they seem to be upon the first impression.

*Continuing the Movie Series – We are getting ready to pick a new movie/short documentary film to watch and discuss. Of course, treats will be provided! Attendees are encouraged to continue discussion on the discussion board on the website if they desire. People who are unable to attend the event may get involved via the discussion board as well.

*Diversity Reading Group – Sheryl Williams is heading up a new event where she will find some journal/newspaper articles on a topic of diversity. People interested in this event will read the literature and get together to discuss the topic (possibly over lunch in the Union?) Sherry’s first topic of interest is the age/generational gap in the workplace.

*National Diversity in Libraries Conference – It’s hard to imagine its been a year and a half since we went to Atlanta for the Diversity Conference, but we’re already thinking about the next one in 2006! There has been talk of an interest in a collaborative venture with KSU to hold a breakout session at this event, but nothing has been set in stone.

*Search Committee for new Resident – The time is drawing near for the application process to begin for our new Resident. WE are excited to watch this event unfold and look forward to meeting and introducing KU’s first minority Resident.

Diversity Committee meetings are the first Monday of every month at 2-3:00 pm and based off an agreement with the current members, we are now going to rotate between libraries to give new people a change to sit in on the meetings without having to go too far out of their way.

Classified Senate
University Support Staff (USS) Working group’s list of suggestions for merit pay criteria:

- Performance
- Conduct
- Compression (how long have you been in the same step, those who have been stuck at the top for longer, etc)
- Taken on more complex duties
- Acquired skills to better perform you job
- Market value of your position (HREO will do this survey)

Longevity continues as it always has for this FY and as of FY07 it will be added to base. Lump sum/paycheck still has not been determined.

Pittsburg State (interested in our USS)

Tuition support for family members:
Fort Hays has set up a very generous system, which is why this issue has come up again. They are trying to retain faculty. Regents are approving this on a campus-to-campus basis and it will look different at each.

Exec Board (meets first Wednesday of the month)
Working on new guidelines for the KU version of the Civil Service Review Board (this is for dismissals, suspensions, demoted, etc – not for disputing your raises). Board to appoint its own Chair. If Provost goes against the Board, will come to the Board with reasons why. Need to forward names as part of the pool for the board. If you are chosen the hearing will be public, the Board will private discuss and then publicly tell each vote. Guidelines are almost finalized (and there is already a need, has been an appeal), Mary Ann will forward the latest draft to aid in the solicitation of people who volunteer to have their names submitted to the pool to be possibly chosen for the Board.

Personnel Committee
Looking into tuition assistance for family members. Ideas similar to health insurance (more you earn the more you pay), waive campus fees as staff do.

Also reviewing inclement weather.

University Support Staff Senate website.
Still need a new logo. Will work with KU art students to design. Great website for information. Minutes will now be posted in DRAFT form.

Senate (meets third Wednesday of the month)
Salary Bands created (go to HR website to view)

(takes you directly to the job codes/hiring ranges document)

Also continuing to work on the Handbook.

Review Merit Pay Position Paper

Plans for the merit increase are in process (likely to see something, perhaps September. Supervisors are to turn in info on employees Aug 1) CCEB will ask Donna if there is going to be an announcement to USS when exactly and details.

Discuss interest in/topic for Fall Library Support Staff general meeting

CCEB used to have two or used to have a general meeting in the fall. For the past 4 years it has been moved to Spring. Idea of having it in the Fall, people have a better opportunity to meet representatives, learn about CCEB, etc.

Possible topics

- suggestion box for new name for conference
- meet new reps and officers
- talk about CCEB plans for coming year
- tour website
- invite the hr (Ola Faucher, Kathy Jansen) people and Dean to discuss merit pay and other changes to USS
- spongebob (for the Spring)

Denise will check the calendar for Sep 16th or Sep 23rd 10-11:30AM

Set new time for regular CCEB meeting and for Retreat

Thursday mornings 10-11:30 (Denise will check the time, beginning Aug 11th, 2005)
Retreat (Special Meeting) at Jaybowl December 15th 10-11:30am (Denise will make sure they are open)

Planning and Resources Committee (PRC)

(Joint committee with LFA: Need to appoint new member and set charges)
Our current members are JoNell Proctor (through 2005), Billie Conway, Jeff McAdams (through2006). Will ask Dean/HR about charges for this committee and ask about recruiting priority
