- ANNEX
- ART
- New color laser printer for $1 each and payable by KU Card account just as regular laser printing.
- Request more information on Merit Process especially clarifying who to talk to about the why and wherefores of the amounts given. It’s supposed to be your supervisor, but it hasn’t actually worked that way so far.
- ENGINEERING (submitted by Jeff McAdams)
- Riding off of a high from KULSS's visit to Spahr almost two weeks prior, we are continuing a wave of unprecedented excellence. The library is host to a multitude of students in the throes of finals studying and stress. Most of these students are engineers, however, we also have had numbers of business and law students, but we have no evidence as to why except for the obvious.
- Summertime is fast approaching, and it is a great time for Spahr tours. Stop by and witness the Eighth Wonder of the Modern World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighth_Wonder_of_the_World). After a tour you get a high-five and a shiny penny (I'm upping the ante).
- MUSIC
- RCL
- New Projects and Services
- Nancy Burich is working with the RCL staff on a pilot project to evaluate the RCL’s reference collection. This project will test policies and procedures for weeding and building reference collections so that the standards can be used later in evaluating the reference collections in Watson and Anschutz.
- Jennifer Mellenbruch and Susan Bailey have finished converting the RCL Circulation Manual into online form for ease of updating and access. Since the Staff Resource Guide covering all other aspects of our operation had already been put online two years ago, our staff resource manuals are now totally online.
- The RCL staff now promotes our library services at all Edwards Campus prospective student information events (four times a year).
- Lissa Lord presents EndNote classes at the Edwards Campus every semester.
- Continuing Education / Staff Development / Awards
- Elizabeth Friese, the RCL’s public services manager, has been accepted into the online MLS program at the University of Alabama. She was one of forty chosen for the program out of over 200 applicants. Elizabeth, along with the RCL’s interlibrary loan/document delivery manager Susan Bailey, attended the regional EDUCAUSE workshop in San Francisco this month. And finally, director of the RCL Lyn Wolz used her GRF grant to travel to London in January to continue her research on women who collected folk music. Carmen Campaneris was an IS Staff Appreciation nominee.
- The Value of the Regents Center Library to the Edwards Campus
- Two Edwards Campus administrators recently highlighted the value of the services and resources provided by the Regents Center Library staff. Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Mary Ryan said in the April 23rd, 2007 issue of the Oread: "We know that nationally the adult learner counts on excellent library and technology services. Our Regents Center library and information technology staff are central to decisions we make about student services." Director of Recruitment Ed Foley also observed that "The presence of a full-service library, staffed by trained librarians, on the KU Edwards Campus is a distinguishing trait that helps separate [us] from over 20 institutions of higher education in Metro KC. This is referenced with pride in all our recruiting presentations….."
- SPENCER (submitted by Mary Ann Baker)
- I will proceed backwards in time:
- 18 May -- there will be a reception for Kathy Lafferty's graduation (after lo, these many years!)
- 12 May -- we had a lovely book-signing and reception for Edgar Tidwell, KU English professor
- 10 May -- we helped with having the SA Appreciation picnic on the KSRL North Terrace.
- Other news: Bill Crowe has been assigned an office on the 3rd floor in Anschutz for his phased retirement and may have already begun to move materials over there. We have not been informed as to what will happen when he is no longer Spencer Librarian.
- We've slowed down somewhat in the reading rooms but we've had a number of visiting academic researchers to keep us busy.

LFA Special Meeting, May 14th, 2007
Discuss the role of Unclassified Professionals in LFA (60 librarians and 29 unclassified), impact on KULSS
- LFA feels unclassified dilutes the status of faculty librarians
- Mary Roach brought up that splitting would send the wrong message
- Mail ballot vote suggested but no quorum, so will not happen.
- Unclassified voice not being heard. Other felt it was more broad and suggested Library Governance with 3 components.
- Brian Rosenbloom was taking minutes. Kathleen Ames Oliver was facilitating.
- QUESTION: Should we split and then a list of pros and cons.
- Is LFA meeting Unclassified needs now. No, something needs to change. Kicking them out is not a constructive way because of the message it sends.
Staff Development Workshop Follow-up
Jill and Monica will be developing this.
Agenda Items for the Dean
Issue of getting concerned parties included on input or major decisions
- Recreational reading room
