    • Classes Lissa Lord gave End Notes I, II & III in-60-Minutes classes and Online Research in-60-Minutes classes.
    • Conferences Lyn Wolz participated in the Management Council Retreat. Susan Bailey attended the NEKLS Tech Day in Topeka.   Lissa Lord attended SidLit at Johnson County Community College and gave the presentation "Scholarly Research on the Internet Updated for Web2.0." Here is the PowerPoint presentation that she gave:  http://www.lib.ku.edu/presentations/Lissa/tao2008.pdf She also attended the Reference Renaissance Conference in Denver.
    • Events The library staff participated in a Kansas City, Kansas Public School's Pathways Leadership Academy event in the summer.  Library staff helped with the Edwards Campus's Welcome Week and Fun Fest in August and in a Prospective Student Event in the summer.
    • Collections  The Regents Center Library has subscribed to the McNaughton Recreational Reading Program with the same loan parameters as the collection in Watson.
    • Technology  The Regents Center Library’s new laptop has had a high checkout before it was heavily marketed.

  • SPENCER (submitted by Meredith Huff)
    • It's been fairly quiet at Spencer.  We have lots of staff out, on vacations or staff development workshops.  The patrons, we have had, have kept us busy paging, shelving, and copying.  Reader Services is in the process of hiring new student assistants for the fall semester.
    • Our new hours, for the public, have been working well for staff and so far no complaints from the public.
    • At one of our meetings we discussed how we could better conserve energy and follow the Provost's policy.  Reader Services is now turning off public and shared computers and printers, at the end of the day, as well as all KSRL staff turning off their computers.  We also received new CFL bulbs for the lamps in the Spencer office and lounge.  We still need to replace the chandeliers bulbs to CFL's (anyone seen any chandelier CFL's?) but we are moving in the right direction.
    • Electricians are still here working on our fire alarm system.  Doug Hatton has read over 20 books while monitoring the work.  No news, yet, when the testing will happen, though it is thought that they will test the alarms when we are not open.  Possibly a Saturday morning, but no confirmation yet.
    • New patron lockers had been set to arrive by beginning of fall semester.  No surprise, they have been delayed.  Kent has been working on getting the current lockers repaired until the new lockers arrive.
    • The roof leaks have been dry.  We were told to expect a new roof over the 3 1/2 stacks, sometime soon.  FO has been busy checking the leaks, the mold, and cleaning up the carport area, which has been cleaned and painted recently.  Still have to watch out for the birds swooping at you when you walk in.
    • Letha Johnson started in University Archives as the new Assistant Archivist.  She seems to be settling in.  Becky is out this week, so Letha is on her own upstairs, though Reader Services staff are available to help, at any time.
    • AV equipment has been moved from University Archives to Reader Services, to aid in better patron assistance.  Recent discussion has it, that we will be limiting patron use of films due to preservation issues, details to be discussed, at next Reader Services meeting.
    • Audrey's last day is August 15th.  She has taken a job at the Art Library on campus, so we will still see her around.  She will be greatly missed.
    • Items continue to go to the annex.  We had our first patron request for annex materials recently.  A slight delay in retrieval was the only snag.  Not too bad, considering we didn't get a chance for a test run prior to patron requests.
    • As things are moved to the Annex, on west campus, we have begun shifting, in our stacks.  State Senate and House materials were moved, to the annex, which has allowed us to begin shifting Kansas Collections serials.  Kansas Collection manuscripts have been making their way to the annex, so we have a manuscript shift in progress as well.  Both are slow going, with limited student coverage and will be done in several stages.

Committee Reports
University Senate (submitted by Mary Ann Baker)

University Senate Exec discussed the issue of Red Dog days in Memorial Stadium.  The community organization had been using Memorial Stadium over the past summers (about 25 years), only to find they were locked out of the stadium this year, with no notification or explanation.  There is an athletics committee which is aware and is checking into the issue.

University Support Staff Senate (submitted by Mary Ann Baker)

  • Budget Issues – checking on the latest information available regarding lay off procedures.  HREO website has information under FAQ, but no policy or procedure is listed.  Suggestion was to create a link to the state procedures.
  • USS Handbook- website is changed/updated frequently---working on notifications to personnel.  Currently there is no way to know what/when it was updated.  President of USS Senate to talk to Provost on this issue.
