Maps, Atlases and Aerial Photographs in the T. R. Smith Map CollectionMost of the maps and atlases shelved in the T.R. Smith Map Collection can be borrowed by patrons who have valid KU ID cards or resident and reciprocal borrower cards. These maps and atlases may be checked out, but only at the Circulation Desk in the T.R. Smith Map Collection. A staff member rolls sheet maps being checked out by patrons into tubes for carrying convenience and protection.
The period of circulation for maps and atlases is usually the same as for books --- four months to University of Kansas faculty and graduate students and six weeks to undergraduates and other borrowers. Reserve items and selected. other material circulate for shorter periods.
A small number of reference atlases, gazetteers and other books are do not circulate. These may be consulted in the T.R. Smith Map Collection. The same is true for maps from the U.S. Serials Set and for selected sheet maps. Aerial photographs are also noncirculating.
