Teaching Tuesdays

Always about teaching . . . not always on Tuesdays

The "Teaching Tuesdays" program is designed to provide a regular forum for library instructors to learn more about teaching and learning. The University of Kansas Libraries are committed to fostering the ongoing professional development of their faculty and staff as teachers in order to meet the increasing demand for instructional services related to information literacy, technology training, scholarly communication issues, and related topics. By providing support for librarians and other information professionals as teachers, we help to meet our core mission of support for teaching, learning, and research at the University of Kansas. The Teaching Tuesdays program is one arena in which the KU Libraries fosters discussion among its staff and among our campus partners about the role of campus information professionals as teachers.

Suggestions for future program topics are always welcome.

Workshops and Retreats:

Spring 2007:

Creating the One-Shot Library Workshop. Presentor: Jerilyn Veldof. Two 1/2 day workshops held May 21 and 22, 2007 in the Burge Union. The speaker, Jerilyn Veldof, is the Director of Coordinated Educational Services & Undergraduate Initiatives at the University of Minnesota. She authored an excellent book titled “Creating the One-Shot Library Workshop: A Step-by-Step Guide” and gives developmental workshops around the country.  These workshops are designed to help with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to design highly effective library workshops, from needs assessment through design and implementation to final evaluations - step by step through the workshop process.  For more information, check out her web site at http://www.tc.umn.edu/%7Ejveldof/WorkshopDesign/

Facebook, Myspace and Web 2.0 Presentors: Tami Albin, Lars Leon, Jan Waterhouse. May 17th from 1:30-3:00 in the CIC. A session designed to look at facebook, myspace and other Web 2.0 technologies (Flickr, Second Life, del.icio.us) and how they are being used in libraries (i.e. library 2.0). Included a broader conversation about how students are using technology to communicate.

Information Literacy Retreat. Presentors: Jean Donham, Jennifer Church-Duran. Full day workshop held January 9, 2007 in the Kansas Union. Our guest speaker, Dr. Jean Donham, has a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Iowa and an M.L.I.S from the University of Maryland.  She is currently College Librarian and a Professor at Cornell College.  Previously, she was an Associate Professor with the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Iowa.  This was the first in a series of workshops and retreats designed to enhance information literacy understanding and facilitate discussions on program development here at KU.  This retreat explored definitions of information literacy, the benefits and limitations of the ACRL (and other) standards, and the impact of IL principles on teaching - from understanding outcomes to developing activities.

Teaching and Learning Styles. Presentors: Erin Ellis, Nikhat Ghouse, Mandy Swygart-Hobaugh. Thursday, Jan. 4, 1-3:30pm in Watson A/B. Designed to help library instructors discover the nuances of learning style, how to use learning styles to improve teaching, and how to employ theories of learning as you plan instruction sessions. This was pre-session to the Information Literacy Retreat on Jan. 9 with Dr. Jean Donham.  In this pre-session, participants gained insight into learning theories and styles.  Knowing about learning theories and styles will provide participants with a foundation and a context for much of Dr. Donham’s presentation. To help in identifying your learning style, participants were asked to complete a fun and quick learning style inventory before attending the pre-session.  Results were discussed in the session.  The inventory provided the basis for discussion of learning styles and how they relate to teaching.

Presentation Skills for Librarians Presentor: Dr. Robert (Robin) Rowland (Chair- Communications Studies). December 12, 2006 at the Center for Teaching Excellence. This workshop was designed to help participants strengthen the presentation skills they use in both teaching and giving conference papers.   Dr. Rowland focused on issues of authenticity and engagement in reaching an audience. This well excecuted session was well-received by attendees

Summer 2006:

50 Minutes for Brillance Presentors: Sarah Kanning, Jennifer Church-Duran. August 2, 11-12 in Watson A.

August 11th 2:30-3:30 in Watson Clark Instruction Center, John Staniunas, Associate Professor of Theatre Studies and Artistic Director for the University Theatre, kicked off the workshop series with a discussion on presentation techniques that library staff may want to consider incorporating into their teaching style and that would allow a better connection with students in many settings, including library instruction sessions.
