The University of Kansas Libraries

The high costs and restrictive licenses imposed by many publishers of scholarly information must be addressed through deeper reforms in scholarly practice than annual rituals of journal cancellations. On Nov. 8, the Provost and the Libraries jointly sponsored a day-long seminar for faculty, graduate students, and other members of the University of Kansas community, on the Tempe Principles for Emerging Systems of Scholarly Communication. These Principles, which have been endorsed by the American Association of Universities, the Association of Research Libraries, and other organizations, recommend changes in scholarly and university practice that are intended to help control costs and broaden access to scholarly literature.
