How to manually add citations from databases that do not export to EndNote:

For databases that do not currently transport citation information to EndNote, you can manually add any items you wish to include in your EndNote library.

It may also be possible to find the articles you need in Google Scholar instead. Here you can type specific article titles and download citations one-at-a-time. Be sure to use Google Scholar while logged into the KU library for wider access. Step-by-step instructions for exporting citations from Google Scholar to EndNote are available here.

  1. Begin by clicking the Add Reference icon in your EndNote library.

  2. Use the Paperclip icon at the top to attach the previously saved PDF (or other file) to your reference (optional).

  3. Select the Reference Type from the drop-down menu at the top (left) then fill in the necessary fields such as author, title, source, publication year, etc. (You may need to check your style manual to ensure you include all the pertinent information for the citation.)

Note regarding author names: For institutional authors, enter the full name of the institution followed by a comma (e.g. United States Census Bureau,). For individual authors, enter the last name, then the comma, then the first (e.g. Doe, Jane).

  4. When finished, click the smaller of the two red Xs in the upper right-hand corner to close. Respond "Yes" when EndNote asks if you would like to save the changes. The new reference will appear in your library.
