Libraries faculty and staff award winners recognized at annual celebration

Thursday, October 6, 2016

The 2016 KU Libraries faculty and staff award winners were formally recognized at the Celebration of Excellence on Wednesday, September 21.

KU Libraries are delighted to announce the 2016 award recipients:

Lea Currie: Gretchen and Gene A. Budig Distinguished Librarian Award

This award is presented annually to a library faculty member who demonstrates meritorious professional performance and service, and made possible by former Chancellor Gene Budig and his wife, Gretchen, longtime supporters of KU Libraries. The 2016 Gretchen and Gene A. Budig Distinguished Librarian Award recipient is Lea Currie.  Under her direction as head of content development Currie has promoted responsible stewardship to maintain the integrity of KU Libraries’ collections as the evolution of scholarly output has changed formats and increased costs during her tenure at KU Libraries.

“As a leader for developing print and non-print collections, Lea has been extremely effective,” said Judith Emde, assistant dean for content and user services. “She has shown excellent understanding of the changing dynamics for library collections by analyzing and re-allocating budgets with a perspective of shifting to a higher ratio of digital resources.  Lea is vigilant in reviewing the potential of new methods of acquiring resources offered by publishers and vendors that may result in cost savings while still supporting the research and teaching needs of the KU community. “

Currie has been nationally recognized for her assessment work on library collections. Her scholarly contributions have focused on collection development methods, collection assessment and on the provision of library services to users.

Julie Petr: Anschutz-Budig Outstanding Librarian Award

This award is presented annually to a library faculty member who demonstrates outstanding initiative in recent professional performance, and made possible by gifts from the Anschutz Foundation and former Chancellor Gene Budig and his wife, Gretchen. The recipient of the 2016 Anschutz-Budig Outstanding Librarian Award is Julie Petr, associate librarian. Since joining the KU Libraries in 2008, Petr has excelled, sustaining long-term projects and creating invaluable new resources. In particular, Petr collaborated with faculty in the School of Journalism to integrate KU Libraries’ services and expertise into the new online Master’s in Journalism degree program, which demonstrates across campus the unique strengths and services offered by KU Libraries’ faculty and staff
