KU Libraries partner to launch 14th annual Read Across Lawrence
KU Libraries are partnering with the Lawrence Public Library to launch the 14th annual Read Across Lawrence. Read Across Lawrence gives community members opportunities to read great literature and access informational programming, all locally. "The Martian" by Andy Weir is this year’s selection for adults.
"The Martian" tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney. Written in the year 2035, Watney becomes stranded on Mars after a dangerous dust storm, leaving him alone to survive. Watney must use his engineering skills and ingenuity to overcome obstacles and to stay alive. "The Martian" was recently released as a full-length motion picture.
Read Across Lawrence will kick off the month-long programming with an event entitled “The Science of Science Fiction” on Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library Auditorium. The event will feature science fiction authors and KU professors James Gunn and Chris McKitterick with experimental particle physicist Philip Baringer to discuss technology’s affect on science fiction. Copies of "The Martian" will also be distributed.
Other Read Across Lawrence events include a Nerd Nite, a talk with Lynn Sherr on her biography, Sally Ride: First American Woman in Space, an After Hours event and more.
Details regarding upcoming events and how to procure a copy of this year’s novel can be found on the Read Across Lawrence for Adults schedule. More information about the program and upcoming events for all ages can be found on the Read Across Lawrence website.
