Mozilla Science Lab expert to discuss role of open in higher education at Open Access Week keynote

Monday, October 9, 2017

Each October, the University of Kansas Libraries celebrate International Open Access Week, along with hundreds of locations around the world. The University of Kansas has been a leader in promoting open research dissemination for over twenty years and has been celebrating Open Access Week since 2010. This year’s events include a keynote talk inspired by the 2017 theme, “Open in Order to…”

A reception and keynote address will be held Tuesday October 17, at 3:30 p.m., in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union. Stephanie Wright, Mozilla Science Lab program lead, will present “The Role of Open in Higher Education: Are we ready for a revolution?” The keynote will look at the revolution in higher education that took place 150 years ago, spurred by Charles Eliot. Wright will discuss why she believes we may be due for another revolution, and how the growing culture of “open” can form a basis for that revolution. Wright focuses much of her work on designing events such as Working Open Workshops and Open Leadership Trainings, as well as developing educational resources, including the Open Data Training Program.

“KU Libraries have been a leader in the movement towards more open scholarship for many years,” said Kevin L. Smith, dean of libraries. “The WOW event, sponsored by Mozilla, aids to further and broaden that effort, helping our scholars do research in the open in order to improve science and make scholarship more engaged and engaging.”

After Wright’s keynote address, the winner of the 2017 University of Kansas Libraries’ David Shulenburger Award for Innovation & Advocacy in Scholarly Communication will be announced. The keynote and reception are free and open to all who are interested.

The keynote and reception are coordinated with the Mozilla Working Open Workshop, hosted by KU Libraries in partnership with Mozilla, on October 16-17, as part of Open Access Week programming.
