Strengthen the stability of the scholarly research record for the KU community and beyond by refining our practices around how content is produced, acquired, described, managed, and discovered. We will continue to align our scholarly communication and content priorities, and ensure that we have the right tools, skills, and data to make work efficiently and effectively influence informed decisions.
A textbook working group was charged by the provost and the membership was expanded. The group continues to look at grant proposals and support open textbook projects.
oaFigr was licensed to assist in analyzing publication patterns of KU faculty in the sciences/social sciences. Data in JR1 form was cumulated and sent to 1Science for analysis.
Acquisitions & Resource Sharing (Acq&RS) worked to establish a SharePoint community to assist in managing the massive amount of generated data, communications, and deadlines in the evaluation of the review of the four big deal journal packages (Elsevier, Oxford, Sage, Wiley). Content Development is currently evaluating data for the Oxford packages. Staff from Acq&RS, Content, and KU-Med are meeting periodically to discuss status of review. Colleagues focused on open access join the meetings to recommend open access talking points with publishers during any potential future negotiations.
Our current e-DDA/short term loan practice is being reviewed to determine if a change to 1-user access in January has achieved any cost savings.
We worked toward more complete and broader exposure of content from KU ScholarWorks, digitized collections, and journals published through KU Libraries by facilitating Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) applications for journals, facilitating article-level indexing in DOAJ, and providing explicit human- and machine-readable Creative Commons licenses or public domain notices where appropriate.

Expand our capacity to support digital scholarship and enhance the research profile of KU faculty. Build our expertise for supporting scholars engaged in digitally-enabled research through targeted professional development and engagement with partners.
Haricombe Gallery Lecture Series: Dr. Shannon Portillo and Dr. Alesha Doan discussed their research on women and the military.
Data services librarian, Jamene Brooks-Keiffer, is now a certified Software Carpentry instructor, having completed training, piloted sessions with KU Libraries faculty and staff, and conducted a Data Carpentry workshop at another institution. Software Carpentry instruction allows the libraries to better support researchers in creating efficient and reproducible workflows.
Libraries faculty and staff helped host the KU Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities (IDRH) Forum and helped facilitate and participated in a new text-analysis working group. These initiatives develop digital scholarship-related skills in the libraries and positions us to better support the digital research across the campus.
Purchase of a new digital video recorder and expanded internal processes have allowed increased capacity to internally produce multimedia content highlighting faculty research and scholarship.
Priority area 3:
Enhance the utility of KU Libraries’ distinctive resources. By taking advantage of new technologies, employing collaborative workflows, and developing new skills, KU Libraries will improve the discoverability, use, and durability of our unique and distinctive resources.
A collaborative project was initiated to digitize selected photos/imagery associated with the Natural History Museum panorama to create an online digital archive.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) in KU ScholarWorks from before 2017 were ingested into the Digital Preservation Network (DPN), a membership organization that provides for the long-term preservation and stewardship of digital resources by replicating content in geographically-distributed repositories. Additionally, post-1923 print dissertations and theses continue to be digitized and added to KU ScholarWorks, with more than 900 now available. The process used to ingest the ETDs will be used to add new ETDs overtime and serves as a model for ingesting other campus resources into DPN, helping ensure that our digital content is preserved for future researchers.
In order to enhance the utility of our distinctive resources, a project team has made significant progress in piloting the open source Islandora digital repository system, a platform that will improve our ability to manage and deliver digital collections. Progress has included modeling repeatable workflows for ingesting content using a set of diverse pilot collections that include images, manuscript materials, and oral histories.
Renovations in the North Gallery of Spencer Research Library were completed, and a new interactive, permanent exhibit was installed. The grand opening of this space was accompanied by targeted promotion to campus, community and alumni audiences, with the goal of further raising awareness of Spencer’s unique and distinctive resources.
A working group was formed to advance the Latino/a community outreach initiative supported by Anderson Fund. This fund is designated to provide resources and staff support that enable us to document the experiences of Latino/a communites in the Kansas region – further expanding the diversity of resources in our collection and ensuring their access to students, researchers and the community at large.
Priority area 4:
Create diverse, strategic, and enduring experiences that support student success and retention efforts. The libraries will strengthen contributions to teaching and learning through sustainable, strategic partnerships, providing responsive and scalable resources that support campus-wide retention efforts, particularly for those focused on first-generation or underrepresented students, as well as students in need.
Student Learning Outcomes working group has convened– developing student learning outcomes based on the ACRL Framework.
Research & Write-Ins and Faculty Day of Writing sessions were held.
In preparation for a potential major collection shift in Watson during summer 2018, a review of Watson Periodicals has begun with the intent of merging these materials into the Watson general collection or to the annex. A review of the PQs was completed with approximately 91,000 items to move thru the inventory unit to the annex.
With the two night & weekend supervisor positions in Anschutz and Watson extended to full time status, research help in evenings is now available until 11:00 through our chat service.
The libraries’ implementation of the ArchivesSpace archival collections management system continues, with a repository of more than 3,500 resource records. Activities have included adding references to digitized resources in finding aids, creating workflows for including digital materials received on physical media, application upgrades, and participation in the ArchivesSpace User and Technical Advisory Councils.
The libraries are collaborating with the School of Architecture & Design as a client for a design/build architecture studio project to replace the study carrels in Watson 3 West. The early research phase of the project incorporated surveys of student users’ needs and preferences, and the architecture students and faculty consulted with library staff throughout the fall to develop and refine comprehensive design and construction plans, timelines and budget.

Continue to build and support a more diverse and engaged faculty and staff. The libraries will continue to build and support a faculty and staff that is deeply engaged in their work and committed to the libraries’ common mission.
A proposal was submitted for consideration of a diversity fellowship/residency program in KU Libraries.
A meet-up for first generation students was held during Hawk Week.
More opportunities for cross functional/divisional communication and feedback have been expanded by opening up some division and specialized meetings to all library staff.
We continue to expand on internal coaching services for staff development.
The organization is maximizing SharePoint learning and development as a knowledge management tool.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion working group hosted several relevant trainings, including Mental Health First Aid, Bringing in the Bystander, and intercultural skills training for user services student employees.
Several Common Book discussions were held in the libraries.
A workshop on learning about having difficult conversations was held.
