Circulation Policies and Procedures - Spring 2021

Borrow, Renew, Return KU Libraries Materials

The book stacks are closed in all library locations.  All KU borrowers and individuals with active KU Library Borrower Cards should request items through the Retrieve from Shelf service and wait to receive the Item Available Notice(s) before coming to the library to check out items.

Active patrons who live outside of Lawrence and Douglas County may request Home Loan Delivery.

Please be aware that items available through HathiTrust Digital Library’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) cannot be checked out by any borrower.  This means items available in ETAS cannot be checked out, including to borrowers who do not qualify to use ETAS.

The library is no longer renewing items for borrowers.  To review due dates for items checked out and to renew eligible items, go to KU Libraries site; under Borrower, Renew, Return, click My Account.

  • Log in with your KU Online ID and Password or with the borrower card number (usually 8 digits or 8 letters and digits) and last name.
  • Follow instructions provided in Renewing Library Materials to complete the renewal process.

The ability to place Recalls for KU items already checked out to other borrowers has been reinstated.  Eligible borrowers will be able to recall items checked out for 2 weeks or longer, and the current borrower will have 14 days to return the recalled item before overdue fines are charged.  See Recalls and Requests.

Items may be returned in person to a KU Libraries location or to an outdoor book return.  For location of book returns and additional information, see Returning Library Materials.  Alternately, items may be shipped to:  Circulation Business Specialist, Watson Library 350, 1425 Jayhawk Blvd., Lawrence, KS 66045.  Pack items securely, obtain tracking, and purchase $100 insurance for each item enclosed.

Overdue Fines, Lost Item Replacement Charges, and Processing Fees

Fines for overdue items and charges for lost and damaged library materials have resumed, and due dates will be enforced.

Overdue fines incurred from March 1 through August 23, 2020 have been forgiven.  This does not include lost item replacement charges and processing fees.

Interlibrary Loan Items Borrowed from Another Library

Users who have finished with ILL items borrowed from another library may return them to one of the walk-up book returns on the Lawrence campus.  See the location of book returns at Returning Library Materials.

Users who need to continue using ILL items borrowed from another library will be notified by Interlibrary Loan when the items need to be returned.
