KU Libraries to host exhibition opening for "Unseen Hands" Oct. 1

The University of Kansas Libraries will showcase a new exhibition in Kenneth Spencer Research Library this October. “Unseen Hands: Care and Preservation of KU Libraries’ Collections” features the essential work of KU Libraries’ Conservation Services unit. 

The exhibition highlights various activities of the department such as repairing and treating damaged items, environmental monitoring, enclosure construction, digitizing audiovisual formats, training future preservation professionals, as well as preparing for and responding to disasters. The conservation services department is responsible for the libraries’ collections at all seven locations. 

“The skills and creativity of our conservation staff help KU Libraries maintain our tradition of excellence by ensuring we can preserve valuable library materials for future students and scholars,” said Beth Whittaker, associate dean and director of Kenneth Spencer Research Library. “As the only fully functional conservation lab in the state, we have a unique opportunity to give back to the region by sharing the importance of the work we do every day.”

The reception will be held on Tuesday, October 1, in Spencer Research Library. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by remarks from Whitney Baker, head of KU Libraries Conservation Services, at 6:15 p.m.
