64th Annual Snyder Book Collecting Contest accepting submissions
KU Libraries are now accepting submissions for the 64th annual Snyder Book Collecting Contest. All KU students — graduate and undergraduate — are eligible and encouraged to enter.
In 1957, Elizabeth Snyder established a book-collecting contest to cultivate and recognize students' interest in collecting books. In recent years, the rules have been modified to accept digital objects and non-print materials for submission as collections or in addition to books.
The contest features $1,100 in total cash awards for both graduate and undergraduate division recipients. Each year, the awards are provided through the Snyder Book Collecting Contest fund, which is managed by KU Endowment. In addition, each winner will receive a gift card from contest co-sponsor Jayhawk Ink, a division of KU Bookstore. Based on entries, first place, second place and honorable mentions are possible in each division.
The entry deadline for the 2020 competition is 12 a.m. on March 22.
An event to honor contestants and award recipients will take place April 14, in Watson Library, third floor West. The awards presentation will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by a reception with refreshments.
The 2019 winner in the undergraduate division was Elizabeth Wegner for the collection entitled “Notes on Sontag.”
First place winners in each division are eligible for entry into the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest, with a top prize of $2,500. In the past, contestants from KU have advanced to the national competition and earned the top awards and prizes.
