Open houses, info session and movie screening part of KU Libraries’ Hawk Week lineup
KU Libraries are hosting four events in conjunction with Hawk Week, August 18-27, with the aim of connecting new students with the libraries’ resources, spaces and staff. Libraries events include a pair of open house events, an information session for its student advisory board and a free screening of “The Hunger Games” aligned with KU’s Common Book program and 2023-24 selection, “Parable of the Sower.”
Hawk Week is a 10-day, event-intensive introduction and orientation to campus life at KU at the start of every fall semester. Hawk Week includes three required events for all new students – "Traditions Night" (Aug. 18), “Jayhawks Give a Flock” (Aug. 19), and “Academic Sunday” (Aug. 20) – and an assortment of voluntary events geared towards promoting community and inclusion, wellness and support, and academics and exploration.
The libraries-hosted events begin Monday, Aug. 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., with an Open House at Watson Library, where students can explore library resources, play games and win prizes. The library will offer short, guided tours of the building at the top of the hour.
At the KULSAP Information Session on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 4-5 p.m., students will be introduced to the KU Libraries Ambassador Program, an opportunity in which students work with library leaders to build new strategies that foster student engagement and invite input in the Libraries.
On Thursday, Aug. 24, 7:30-10 p.m., Watson Library is hosting a movie night in the 3 West Reading Room for “The Hunger Games.” A dystopian science fiction story, the film touches on themes similar to those in “Parable of Sower,” the 2023-24 KU Common Book. Copies of the Common Book, as well as refreshments, will be available.
Students can visit the Makerspace in Anschutz Library, room 203 A-C, on Friday, Aug. 25, 1-4 p.m., and engage in hands-on activities that promote creative discovery. During the Makerspace Open House,” students will also have the opportunity to learn about the space and the tools available, including 3D printing and podcasting equipment.
All four libraries’ events aim to inform new students and remind returning students that KU Libraries support the entire campus community with information, resources and assistance to promote academic success. KU Libraries have world-class collections and scholarly resources for research papers, projects and course work, as well as friendly staff and librarians with the expertise to help find what’s needed.
