Nominations open for KU Libraries’ open access award

The David Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright is now accepting nominations for the annual Shulenburger Award for Innovation & Advocacy in Scholarly Communication through Sept. 18.

Established in 2014 through a gift by former KU Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger, the Shulenburger Award recognizes KU faculty, staff, students and academic departments who champion open access and innovation in scholarly communication. The Award is given annually for exceptional efforts to advance innovations in open sharing and advocacy for positive change in the scholarly communication system.

Up to two individuals or departments will be selected from nominations for award amounts between $500 and $2,500. Individual awardees may be invited to serve on KU's Open Access Advisory Board. In all, 11 honorees have been named, including two in 2022 – Shannon O'Lear, professor, Department of Geography & Atmospheric Science, and director, Environmental Studies Program; and Corey Rayburn Yung, professor, School of Law. 

“KU has a proud history of advocacy for open access and related innovations in scholarly publishing, beginning with Dr. Shulenburger's leadership and persisting to the present,” said Josh Bolick, head of the Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright.  “Shulenburger Awardees have pushed the envelope in their fields and at KU. We’re excited to continue that work by recognizing new awardees for their innovations and advocacy in scholarly communication.”
