Biography —
Milton Machuca-Gálvez is the Librarian for Spanish, Portuguese, Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Kansas Libraries. He develops and stewards collections from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal, and their diasporas, with particular emphasis on Central America and Indigenous communities.
Milton serves as the library liaison to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS). He provides research consultations, library instruction, collection development, and specialized support for students and faculty working across the humanities and social sciences. His work includes acquiring publications through international vendors and book fairs, identifying distinctive and underrepresented materials, developing research guides, and collaborating with colleagues in special collections and digital initiatives.
Trained as both an anthropologist and a librarian, Milton brings extensive experience in teaching, ethnographic research, translation, visual anthropology, and Latin American studies to his work in academic librarianship. Before joining KU Libraries in 2023, he served as Humanities Librarian and Visiting Scholar at the University of New Mexico. He previously taught anthropology, Latin American and Latino studies, and Spanish at Swarthmore College, Pitzer College, Temple University, and other institutions.

Milton’s research examines the intersections of librarianship, anthropology, translation, cultural heritage, and the representation of historically marginalized communities. His work is grounded particularly in Central America and in his longstanding collaboration with Ngäbe communities and organizations in Panama.
His current projects include the digitization and description of Ngäbe publications through a post-custodial and community-centered approach; a book-length ethnographic study of devotion to San Judas Tadeo in Guatemala; and the translation and recovery of historical and anthropological works related to Central America and Indigenous peoples.
Translation is central to his scholarly practice. Through the translation of difficult-to-access English-language ethnographies into Spanish, he seeks to return scholarly knowledge to the communities and regions from which it originated and to expand access beyond predominantly English-speaking academic audiences.
